When the property that eventually became Harborfront Park was first purchased by the Village of Port Jefferson 13…More years ago, there were very ambitious plans to develop the property for residents to enjoy themselves in full view of the Port Jefferson's beautiful waterfront. Since that time, the goal of the town has been realized and there's a 5.1-acre park stretching from the back of the Chandler building along the harbor behind the Village Center. Once this land housed a shipyard and an oil company terminal, now it hosts a playground for children, a water-spray splash area and a place to take in the sights of Long Island Sound with beach access and a pier.
The centerpiece of the park is the Landmark Sculpture showing four seamen as they carry the framework of a ship toward the harbor. The sculpture honors the shipbuilding history of Port Jeff. There's a promenade for walking along the newly-built bulkheads of the harbor and benches for sitting and taking in the view year-round. Also on-site is the seasonal ice skating rink completing the multi-use facility that the Village imagined Harborfront Park would eventually become.
