Looser restrictions mean more and bigger fish for anglers.
Ask the average fisherman and he’ll tell you that the less restriction on fishing the better. More fish, bigger fish and a longer season means more fun out on the water. Just this month, the New York State Department of Conservation loosened restrictions on fluke, porgy and black sea bass, meaning that the agency thinks the populations of those species are healthy and plentiful. “These regulation changes reflect improvements to populations of scup [porgy], black sea bass and summer flounder [fluke],” said Kathy Moser, DEC Assistant Commissioner for Natural Resources, in a statement announcing the expansion. Moser pointed to porgy – a popular game fish among kids and adults – as being particularly robust. Fishermen and bait and tackle shop …
Jake Gittler, 20, wins contest by submitting winning YouTube video.
While the New York Rangers work toward winning the Stanley Cup this year - currently they're in the Eastern Conference Finals against the New Jersey Devils - one Port Jefferson fan is already looking forward to next year. Jake Gittler, 20, recently took an outside-the-box approach to winning a YouTube video fan contest, showing why he deserved season tickets to each and every Rangers game next year. He was named the winner during intermission of a home game in April, beating out four other finalists. Gittler, a political science major at the University of Vermont according to the Port Times Record, scaled a snow-covered summit on a cold and windy day, proceeding to hoist a homemade Stanley Cup, ending with "I am a Ranger!" To read the Port…

West Islip is the top seed for boys; Ward Melville is No. 1 girls team.
Lacrosse is a Long Island state of mind, and nothing showcased that more than the state playoffs a year ago. Three Long Island boys squads played in state title games, which ended with Farmingdale hoisting its first Class A plaque. It could have easily been West Islip instead. The teams played a thrilling Long Island championship game decided in overtime. West Islip, after all, has worn four of the last six state crowns. Perennial girls lacrosse power Northport finally broke through and won its first state Class A championship. In fact, Long Island girls teams have won nine of 10 possible state class titles (A, B, C) since 2009. But the first step is winning Suffolk, which begins with boys and girls lacrosse playoff games this week. The …

The individual meets include a 2000- and 3000-meter race with barriers and a water obstacle in freshman, novice and open categories, the paper reported. To see full results of this year's Steeplefest click here. "Steeplefest is one of a kind," the paper reported Port Jefferson girls head coach Brian Snow as saying. What makes it unique is that there are few opportunities to run the race at all during the season much less an invitational of this type dedicated to the event, according to Snow. “The competition is just one of …

If fielded, a new JV lacrosse team will share stadium time with the track team.
Port Jefferson School District’s track coach spoke in front of the school board on Tuesday night with his team in tow to voice his displeasure at a potential loss of practice time to a new lacrosse team. According to Coach Rod Cawley, the track team will lose up to 20 percent of its field time in a deal that he says will disrupt practice for his students. Pointing out the successful season that his team just completed and the 90 year history of the program, Cawley said that the practice time is vital to keeping up that same level of performance. While their coach spoke, the kids surrounded the sitting board members and passed a ball back and forth to help make the point that even while the lacrosse team waited for their turn on the field, …
An open letter to the Port Jefferson community from the Superintendent of Schools.
Dear Parents and Community Members, At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Board of Education, the Board voted unanimously to adopt the budget as proposed at $38,076,500; representing a 2% increase to our tax levy. This spending plan was created after months of evaluation, dialogue, and input from many stakeholders. The driving force throughout the process has been to maintain the integrity (in fact excellence) of our instructional program, while making targeted reductions to prepare for the impending loss of revenue from the LIPA plant. The Board of Education and I are confident that the spending plan presented to the community does just that. Since Tuesday night’s meeting, however, discussion in parts of the community seems to center around …
