First United Methodist Church Welcomes New Reverend

First United Methodist Church welcomes new Pastor, Rev. David Mantz.

The First United Methodist Church in Port Jefferson had a new face at morning mass a few weeks ago however, it was not a member of the congregation that was new, but the Pastor. Reverend David Mantz performed his first service as the new Pastor at the church on Sunday July 3. For Rev. Mantz, his move to First United Methodist Church has not only been a blessing for himself but his entire family. His wife Sandy is the new pastor at United Methodist in Setauket. The couple will now be at neighboring churches, less then 2 miles apart in fact and often performing ministry together. Patch sat down with Rev. This Day in History: Port Jeff's Methodist Church Dedicated

Reverend T.L. Price oversaw the dedication in 1894.

On May 20, 1984 the Methodists in Port Jefferson dedicated a new church at its current locationon Main Street in Port Jefferson. Reverend T.L. Price was pastor at the time that the church was built. According to an article published in the New York Times in 1894, the "handsome new church" seated 400 congregants and cost $12,000. The First United Methodist Church was incorporated in 1835. Before that, the Port Jefferson Methodist Society met at the home of Zachariah Hawkins to worship with traveling reverends. The home was at the site where Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church sits today. In 1873, the current location of First United Methodist Church was established and a church was then built.
