Major drug bust nets
Of the 161 individuals arrested in last week's heroin bust, 3 were from Port Jefferson and Port Jefferson Station, according the the Queens District Attorney's office. The bust, dubbed "Operation Heroin Highway" played out over the course of a year, originating in Queens and expanding into Nassau and Suffolk Counties. In all, officers seized more than 8,000 glassine envelopes of heroin, more than five kilograms of heroin, 2.7 kilograms of cocaine and five pistols, a shotgun and an assault rifle. Police arrested two Port Jefferson men Tuesday morning after officers discovered they had heroin and a hypodermic needle in the car.
Officers pulled over Victor Cohen, 39, of Port Jefferson for speeding on County Road 104 in Quogue at around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, police said. Police found that his license had been suspended and that he was under the influence of heroin and possibly marijuana, they said. He also had a hypodermic needle with heroin in it, officers said. Cohen was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument, all misdemeanors. Heroin and Opiate Advisory Panel report gives 48 recommendations to fill gaps, address issues of substance abuse.
Suffolk Heroin and Opiate Advisory Panel is asking Suffolk County officials to re-evaluate the county's war on drugs, now a "crisis" situation. The panel presented 48 recommendations aimed at improving the prevention, treatment, and recovery support for substance abuse to the Suffolk County legislature's Health and Human Services Committee Thursday afternoon.
