Tom Clancy Tribute
Author Tom Clancy passed away on October 1, 2013 in Baltimore.
Mr. Clancy was the author of many of novels as well as several non fictional works about the U.S. Military. While working as an insurance salesman, he wrote the manuscript that would become his first novel, The Hunt for Red October( 1984) http://alpha2.suffolk.lib.ny.us/record=b1433314~S50 He submitted the book to the Naval Institute Press. After some revisions, they bought the book for $5,000, and the rest is history.
Clancy’s books were a new kind of novel, a smart, fast paced, technically accurate military thriller with great character and well written dialog. Clancy never served in the military; he was nearsighted and ineligible for military service. His works were carefully researched. He had always had enjoyed reading technical manuals and interviewed experts. Some of his writing was so accurate it had military personnel questioning if he had proper security clearance. Clancy maintained that while he researched as much as possible, the other ideas were of his own invention.

The novel’s major character was Jack Ryan, whom readers first met in The Hunt for Red October. Ryan is a CIA analyst. He works his way up and in Debt of Honor http://alpha2.suffolk.lib.ny.us/record=b2161211~S50 (1994) eventually ends up becoming President of the United States. Ryan’s son Jack Ryan Jr. follows in his father’s footsteps working for the CIA in The Teeth of the Tiger http://alpha2.suffolk.lib.ny.us/record=b3373977~S50
Clancy’s last book Command Authority is due to be released in December. It will feature his iconic character Jack Ryan.
