Bathing Advisory Issued for Some Local Beaches

Rainwater run off causes unsafe conditions at some area beaches.

Heavy rainfall on Sunday and Monday have made the beaches located around Setauket’s Strongs Neck area potentially unsafe for bathing, according to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

Heavy rain causes bacterial numbers to increase in these protected waterways from storm water run off. The beaches of Bayberry Cove Beach, Bayview Beach, Grantland Beach, Indian Field Association Beach and Little Bay Beach in the bays just west of Port Jefferson Harbor are at potential risk because they are located in an enclosed embayment and experience limited tidal flushing.

The alert sent out by the agency said that beaches “not directly influenced by stormwater runoff” including most beaches on Long Island Sound are not affected by this advisory. Cedar Beach, West Beach and East Beach were not listed on this alert.

It’s recommended by the Health Services Department that “bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles (at least a 24 hr. period) after the cessation of rainfall.”
