For the Boys & Girls Club of Suffolk County, more space means more opportunities for kids to learn, play and grow.
That's exactly what the organization's new clubhouse in Port Jefferson Station will offer, according to program coordinator Dina DeMeo. The BGC is leaving its Setauket clubhouse on North Country Rd. to establish a new one at Calvary Baptist Church on Jayne Blvd. in Port Jefferson Station.
The new BGC facility will be introduced to the community at a Feb. 25 open house from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
"It’s going to help the community, which is our goal," DeMeo said. "It’s really the opportunity we’ve been looking for for a long time. You can’t have programs if you don’t have space, so this opportunity is wonderful."
There was also recent talk of the BGC taking up space at the International Baptist Church on Route 25A in Stony Brook, but DeMeo said the Jayne Blvd. space emerged as a possibility just as that one was falling through.
The organization will still continue to hold after-school programs at Gelinas Junior High and Murphy Junior High, where activities are held typically between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. DeMeo said that the new facilities at Calvary Baptist Church – which is also home to North Shore Christian School – will allow programs to run a bit later, until about 7 p.m.
The BGC is currently enrolling for its summer camp program; it will also hold classes such as art, photography, and others as interest and need arises. The new facilities will also include a new computer room equipped with 10 computers donated by Staples.
