Crimes Nearby: Man Points Laser at Airplane and Police Helicopter

The following arrest information was supplied by the Suffolk County Police Department or town police and does not indicate a conviction.

Smithtown

- Suffolk County Police arrested a 21-year-old St. James man after they say he pointed a green laser at an airplane and the ensuing police helicopter sent out to determine the laser's location.

David Smith was charged with obstructing governmental administration in the second degree and may face future charges from the New York Port Authority and New Jersey Terrorism Task Force.

According to police, the Federal Aviation Administration notified SCPD that an aircraft had been targeted around 9:55 p.m. by a green laser pointer on the ground. While a responding helicopter approached the airspace where the alleged initial incident occurred, police said the helicopter was also targeted by the laser.

Using units on the ground in the Fourth Precinct and Community Oriented Police Enforcement, Smith's residence on King Arthur's Court was determined to be the location, they said. He was arrested less than an hour after the FAA contacted SCPD.

Police said the investigation is continuing.

Miller Place-Rocky Point

- Scott Loeser, 18, of Rocky Point, was arrested Dec. 6 at about 9:30 a.m. and charged with petty larceny. He allegedly took a laptop and a fishing pole from a residence on Sun Road in Rocky Point.

- Richard McKibbin, 32, of Manorville, was arrested Dec. 6 at about 8:06 p.m. and charged with seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled susbtance and petty larceny. He allegedly took took assorted clothing from Kohl's in Rocky Point and during a search the controlled substance was found.

- Melissa Cook, 21, of Rocky Point, was arrested Dec. 7 at about 5:22 p.m. and charged with petty larceny. She allegedly took assorted jewelry, perfume, and clothing from Kohl's in Rocky Point.

Riverhead

- A Riverhead man was found and arrested by Riverhead Town police with an apparently self-inflicted knife wound after police said the man stabbed his live-in girlfriend in the arm at a downtown gas station on Dec. 13, according to a statement released by town police.

Kristopher Smilowska, 37, reportedly stabbed his live-in girlfriend in the arm at the convenience store on West Main Street at about 2:13 a.m., then fled on foot, according to a police report of the incident. The victim's wound was not life-threatening, police said.

Police said they responded to the incident and found Smilowska on Raynor Avenue. He had stabbed himself in the chest, according to a police report of the incident. Smilowska was arrested for second-degree assault and taken first to and later to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment, police said.

- Eddie Brown, 52, of Riverhead, was arrested Dec. 8 at 12:02 p.m. at police headquarters in Hampton Bays and charged with petty larceny, a misdemeanor. Brown came into headquarters on notice for an arrest warrant he had received, police said. Brown stole two tires with rims valued at $70 from the Best Price Auto Repair Shop on Riverleigh Avenue in Riverside, according to police.

- Misael Jocop, 24, of Flanders was arrested Nov. 19 at 12:14 a.m. on Flanders Road in Flanders and charged with third-degree criminal mischief, a felony. Jocop and another unidentified man punched in the windows of a home near his own. Jocop was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for injuries sustained during the crime, officers said.

- Lakiwa Kelly, 25, of Riverhead, was arrested Dec. 9 at 8:20 p.m. at the corner of Evergreen and Flanders roads in Flanders and charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor. Kelly was stopped for a broken front headlight and officers saw that her license was suspended, police said.
