HISTORY: Bayles Shipyard Band Played New Year's Eve Parties

Historical photo from the village archives.

According to village historian Ken Brady, the Bayles Shipyard Band used to play for a variety of events in Port Jefferson including ship launchings, Friday night dances, receptions, costume parties, and New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Here, the band was photographed in 1919 by Arthur S. Greene on the grounds of the Plant Hotel in Port Jefferson.

Great Picture.....I sure that James Bruke is there...a horn player who lost use of one of his arms....might be the musican far right...(only a family member would know for sure).....I know Orlando B. Davis (we know him as O.B.) was in the Fire Dept. Band...might be there as well.

The man on the far right is Robert Arthur Burke, the father of James Francis Burke. James is my father and I was thrilled to see this wonderful picture.
