This Day in History: Bank President Completes 50 Years of Service in 1941

R. B. Dayton spent five decades with The Bank of Port Jefferson.

In 1941, the County Review reported that R. B. Dayton, president of The Bank of Port Jefferson, completed 50 years of service with only that one institution on June 30.

This seems like an incredible feat in today’s job market where companies are bought and sold many times over within a decade and losing one’s position from either "downsizing" or "off-shoring" has become commonplace.

According to the report, Dayton started with the bank as a clerk and bookkeeper on July 1, 1891 and rose to become president in 1929. An entire career played out in the village of Port Jefferson during the early 20th century.
