Week in Review: Possible Chick-fil-A in PJS, More Common Core Concerns

A roundup of the top headlines in the area this week.

The owner of All Island Marine, located at 466 Route 25A in Mount Sinai, informed the police that someone had been breaking into boats stored at the facility stealing batteries. 

The facility secures the boats using a white shrink-wrap material that is designed to protect the boats from the elements while not in use. After an investigation, officers said they arrested Derek Parian, 23, of Coram for the incident.

According to the report, Parian illegally entered numerous boats removing their batteries and bringing them to a local scrap yard. The scrap yard paid Parian $18 per battery.

Parian has been charged him with seven counts of Petit Larceny and four counts of Criminal Mischief 4th Degree. He will be held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.

The Town of Brookhaven is considering allowing a Chick-fil-A to be built at the former car dealership on Route 347 near Terryville Road. The Town Board will review the proposal at it's monthly Dec. 3 meeting. 

Student Expresses Concerns Over Common Core At Comsewogue Forum

To help parents fully grasp the different between terms like 'Common Core,' "modules,' 'scripts,' and 'high-states' testing; Superintendent Joseph Rella and other representatives hosted a forum on Tuesday night to give presentations and answer questions from residents in the community. 

One student took to the microphone to explain his feelings against Common Core and how difficult it has been for him. While, Rella agreed, saying the exams are useless.  

4th Annual Polar Plunge at Cedar Beach Set For This Saturday

Special Olympics New York and the Town of Brookhaven is still looking for volunteers to join the hundreds of participants already committed to “Freezin’ for a Reason” on Saturday. 

This year marks the 4th Annual Town of Brookhaven Polar Plunge at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. Brave souls with warm hearts will run, jump, and dive into the chilly waters of the Long Island Sound to raise funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.

According to Kristina Aquilone, director of development, the Special Olympics Polar Plunges have become a common household fundraiser offered countrywide. Aquilone said that last year alone more than 6,000 plungers and 15,000 spectators were part of the Plunge Season raising nearly $1 million statewide.

Port Jefferson Resident Awarded 'Agency Hands in the Community' Award

Mark Jones, an insurance agent at Allstate, has been awarded the Agency Hands in the Community award for his commitment to volunteering. Jones works out of the 1109 Hallock Avenue office located in Port Jefferson. 

“Mark is an active and respected member of the business community, protecting people with insurance and financial services products,” said Linda Collora, New York regional sales leader at Allstate Insurance Company. “He also makes a point of getting involved personally by dedicating his time and efforts to making a difference in people’s lives.

Additionally, The Allstate Foundation for Texting Awareness received a $1000 grant. The money will be used towards future campaigns to help raise awareness that teens should not be texting while driving. The insurance company has been working hard teen deaths and other injuries caused by distracted drivers.
