Who is the Unofficial Mayor of Port Jefferson?

Tell us who you think makes the Port Jefferson community tick.

Port Jefferson already has one official village mayor in Margot Garant, a Town of Brookhaven councilman, a Suffolk County legislator, a state assemblyman, a civic association president, village historian, and other prominent residents who make up the fabric of this town.

But who is the unofficial mayor of this community? The person behind the scenes or at the front of the crowd, whose name everyone knows.

We're taking nominations this week and will collect the nominations into a poll. Log in to Patch and add your answer as a comment below.

It used to be John McNamara. You can thank him for the present Hope House/ Pax Christi Debacle !
Daisy February 17, 2012 at 03:07 PM
John McNamara may have caused a Debacle but it sure wasn't Hope House or Pax Christi. With todays need for more of these places people should get involved and see what a wonderful job Fr. Frank is doing.

Father Frank is doing a "wonderful" job of turning our town into slum - homeless, drunkards, vagrants hanging out in the shopping centers and railroad station causing problems (i.e. fights, accosting customers for handouts) Our home values are going down because of "wonderful" Father Frank! Now these people are walking through our neighborhoods, hanging at the parks doing God knows what. Maybe you like them in your neighborhood, but this is not what I moved here for. Father Frank has been a negative impact on our quality of life in Port Jefferson Station and Terryville. These charges of his use up time and money of our services, cops, ambulance, firefighters for all the problems they cause. People are afraid at the railroad station or to shop at Jefferson Plaza, and n one in their right mind would dare to go to any place near the RR station for shopping - even the laundrymat over there has become a hangout! And yes John McNamara had ALOT to do with Father Frank taking over our town! Father Frank needs to go, but since that is not happening any time soon my family and I are getting out - maybe Father Frank would like to buy my house and turn it into a shelter!

Ask Father Frank or anyone from Hope House about the loan that got his "operation" started...John McNamara arranged it with the Bank of Ireland.
BillLongisland February 17, 2012 at 03:30 PM
Ask Father Frank "why", around the time of McNamara's Demise, he got "reassigned" out of Port Jefferson, to Sound Beach.

Want to remind everyone that we love commentary on all side of every issue but on this post it's supposed to be about nominating people in Port Jefferson who are the positive role models around the village. Those who are the helpful types who make things happen, knows people and is always helping out. Can we keep that the subject of this post please? Thanks.

Father Frank took in CHILDREN whose parents did not want to bother raising anymore. Raising childen is hard, don't blame someone who cared enough to step up and help when the "parents" gave up.
Americanivory February 17, 2012 at 05:17 PM
You're right Lon, but I can't help it when I see folks defending the mess Father Frank has made of our town. Just one last comment to Lisa Carbone - the parents didn't want these "children" - BTW they are not children, they are late teens, and adults. Pax Christi is all adults. It;s great he wants to step in and help, but he has gone overboard and ruined our town in the meanwhile.

Yesterday I made a comment about the safety (or lack of) at the upper Port Jefferson/Port Jefferson Station area where I enjoy shopping (at the Bravo Supermarket, to be exact). My comment did not show up. There is definitely a degeneration of my comfort level when I go to pick up groceries there. I find I have to rotate my head 360 to make sure I'm not being staked out or followed as I make my way to the store. I come from the "hood", Washington Heights, and am not afraid of a diverse population. There are other things going on that make me ultra cautious and I've certainly noticed a greater influx of troubled types that probably land here due to the open arms of Pax Christi & Hope House. These are tough times but I don't beg or pick up cigarette butts or deal drugs; I just want to get through each day without incident.

It really is worse than its ever been. The illegals and homeless eyeing you everywhere you go in Port Jeff Sta, its not a way to live. It reminds me of Huntington Station sometimes. Nowhere else on the island except maybe Wyandanch, Riverhead, and Brentwood have the same quality of people in the PJS area.

Lon, stop helping to forward what is killing this Village..face the Reality of the decay.
BillLongisland February 20, 2012 at 09:19 AM
Lon, is it possible that there is No One, that people can think of, who is a "positive role model around the village" ? If you can name one, and substantiate it with Facts, please "chime in".
Marianne Carrano Deszcz February 20, 2012 at 02:28 PM
I have to respectfully disagree with the notion that there is No One who is a role model in Port Jeff Village. Meredith Festa, the Branch Manager for Chase in the Village does a tremendous amount in the community with Guardians of Rescue. Cynthia Linder of Advanced Hypontherapy frequently holds seminars and writes articles that help people cope with everyday issues. These women both promote education, awareness and positivity in all of their endeavors.

LC..I don't know you or your personal life, however, I DO know about totally out of control children/young adults...I know what it's like to do everything that you can to redirect them...I know what it's like to live with someone like that and watch each day as your world/family are torn apart...I know what it's like to need help for them, more help than their family can give...Parents don't "give up" they do what they need to do FOR the child...and sometimes that means places like Hope House or in some extreme cases, jail... May you NEVER have to walk the path of parents who have had that experience..
BillLongisland February 20, 2012 at 05:01 PM
Mels Ditties what does, what Father Frank does, have to do with keeping the area Clean and Free of being harassed by his "charges" ? Nothing...it doesn't give him some sort of Free Pass, to negate his responsibility to The Whole Community!
Mels Ditties February 20, 2012 at 05:11 PM
BIL...My post really had nothing to do with Father Frank or Hope House...As a parent who went to hell and back with one child/young adult, it seriously bothered me that LC's opinion was that parents just "give up".... I do, however, think that Pax causes more problems than Hope House...
Lon Cohen February 20, 2012 at 05:29 PM
Thanks for the suggestions, Marianne. I'll take these people and put them into our poll.
Cynthia Lindner, MS February 21, 2012 at 06:11 AM
Thanks, Marianne. I have been enjoying your blogs, and the accounts of the foster care you provide for our four legged friends. You belong in the poll!

Talk to all of the families Father Frank has helped with his programs, he is not a problem in the community at all. The laundromat by the RR Station is a hangout, because the owners promote it as one: they host movie nights, singles nights, etc. In my lifetime, the stores by the train station have almost all been the same. There is a high latino population that lives there and many of the stores there are aimed at that community, but I have been in to a few of those stores/eateries myself and NEVER experienced a problem, EVER. Just a block or 2 up from the tracks, is a huge empty lot that is typically home base for many homeless, and there are some that seem to congregate in the Plaza Shopping Center and sadly, some of them seem to have mental disabilities. This is life. At nearly ANY railroad station you have to be cautious and vigilant / on guard. That has nothing different to do w. PJ nor with Father Frank.
LIGirl08 April 01, 2012 at 05:48 PM
Lenny- as someone who does a lot of work with the Latino community on Long Island, especially in our area, I find it a bit offensive to just casually stereotype. I can tell you from personal knowledge, MANY (if not, most) of the "illegals" in that area specifically are gainfully employed, WITH papers/green cards to be here. Also, I know of a handful of people at my (local) job who have had trouble with the law, and all but 1 comes from the all-American, upper-middle caucasian community. So who are we to look at when addressing the 'quality' of people in our area?
Rohan Perera April 14, 2012 at 05:31 AM
In the same vein that Time magazine Person of the year went to a group in 2011 here is my nomination, Occupy Port Jefferson (#OPJ), which finally has made Port Jefferson tick.
