LA Fitness Health Club To Replace Old Telephone Company Building in Port Jeff Station

Plans to knock down structure on Route 112 and put up a two-story fitness center.

A national fitness chain is looking to come to Port Jefferson Station in a big way. The application to build an LA Fitness health club is on the decision calendar for the Brookhaven Town Planning Board’s next meeting on Monday evening at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville. Port Plaza, the company that runs the shopping center, is listed as the applicant.

If all goes well the old telephone company building on Route 112 just north of Port Plaza will be torn down and a new 45,000 square foot, two-story fitness center will be built on the roughly 18-acre property. There is a plan to build a freestanding bank there as well.

Port Jefferson Station Terryville Civic Association President Ed Garboski said that the developer met with the group and he felt that they were very cooperative and listened to their concerns. He said the association had made some requested changes to the plans and the developers heard their ideas. The company told them it would consider planting drought resistant plants to help save water. He also hoped they would consider discounted memberships for high school students to encourage fitness and for community members.

The site is in the .

“We think it’s a good addition to the community,” Garboski told Patch by phone.

A few years back we, the Civic Association and resiidents, started the long process of turning the portion of Route 112 that runs from Bicycle Path to the Long Island Rail Road Station into a traditional "Main Street" for Terryville and Port Jefferson Station. It started with our Hamlet Study and as the process moved forwared it has included bringing in recognizable corporate entities that are community oriented such as Uncle Giuseppe's and PetSmart. In addition we have been working closely with our Councilman Steve Fiore Rosenfeld, The New York State Department of Transportation and Assemblyman Englebright to purchase and install antique lighting along this stretch of Route 112. This same stretch of Route 112 contains 8 buildings that are between 80 and 133 years old. The LA Fitness is another piece to the puzzle, it shall repolace the existing telephone building on the north side of the Uncle Giuseppe's Shopiing Center and provide the residents in our area and surrounding areas with a modern training facility. We are hoping that LA Fitness provides senior exercise classes and incentives to local residents to encourage them to joing the gym. The people representing LA Fitness were receptive to oiur request for sign, landscaping, sewage treatment and building designs. We believe that LA Fitness is going to be a good neighbor for years to come. Louis Antoniello Terryville Resident Hamlet Study Chairman

Does anyone know when this will be happening? I'm excited as a member that currently travels from Rocky Point to the more western locations. I virtually grew up in PJ and I'm really looking forward to this one. The building is already there, becoming an eyesore, why not spruce it up and put something in its place... :)

Looks like something is getting started. Just tonight noticed the old building surrounded by construction type temporary fencing.
