What Would You Like to See Built at Old Hi-Lite Diner Site?

Along with the TD Bank, builder is asking for ideas from the community.

After months of delays, the construction on is under way at the old Hi-Lite Diner site on the corner of Old Town Road and Route 347 in Port Jefferson Station.

Developer Jim Tsunis said that a 14,000 square foot office building planned for the site adjacent to the bank is still open for debate. Tsunis went to the Port Jefferson-Terryville Civic Association meeting last week asking civic members for input into what the community would like to see built there.

Ideas bandied around have been typical of the corridor from a drug store to a fast food joint.

Patch wants your opinion. Take our poll or tell us what you think in the comments below.

A tattoo parlor. Usually Jim Tsunis has more land to work with, like for his Jefferson Meadows project, so for now, I guess he is just worried now about getting that "Welcome" sign in. http://www.pjstca.com/index.php?p=recentMeetings

I would like to see a nice resteraunt. We have so many banks within a 1 mile radius, that I think it is not neccessary. I think a nice Irish resteraunt would be nice. We have enough pizza places around.

I'd like to see a political office, so they can get the camera yellow light and "no turn on red" tickets

Thank you Lon, posting this question for the community was a great idea ! How about a sit down ice cream shop like Maggie Moos or Cold Stone?

Nothing sounds good !

A gas station would mop up right there. Somehow there are no gas stations on the right side of 347 from the BP near Best Buy all the way to Miller Place (the Mobil in Mt Sinai doesn't count until it's actually open)

i would love to see an affordable FAMILY STYLE restaurant in that spot, preferrably italian or a classy stylish spanish restaurant like meson ole or costa de hispana which i heard is closing. with this economy and families struggling we need to find a way to bring families together doing something affordable is what we need i hear people every day saying they cant afford to take their family out to eat, thats really sad.were surrounded by gas stations, drug stores and fast food .we need something different.

I think an niche/ethnic sit down restaurant or dessert/ice cream/yogurt shop would be a welcome addition to our community. Outdoor seating amongst the remaining trees would be nice too.

I also agree with Lori. Restaurants, etc. are nice ideas but let's look at this in a more realistic fashion. We know a bank is going to be built. Patrons for that bank are going to require space for parking. If another type of establishment is constructed those patrons too will require space for parking. Considering the size of that piece of property it doesn't, in my opinion, leave much room for parking and the bank drive throughs. The intersection of Old Town Rd and Rt 347 does not need the additional traffic those businesses are going to generate.

There's no less than 12 places to get ice cream/yogurt in Port Jeff. And more ethnic restaurants in the area than I can order from in a month. As for "this economy," it doesn't seem to be an issue at Outback, where a burger costs twelve bucks and the place looks packed every Thursday through Sunday night. I for one think there NEEDS to be another bank in the area. The rest have been robbed so many times I'm bored of reading the stories.

Do you have any idea of how big that piece of property is or the parking requirements for a bank or restaurant?
Earl August 30, 2012 at 09:14 PM
No need for anything there, we have too many of everything here already!!! Stop freakin building already!!!! Better yet, open up a big hole so we can sweep all the lowlife's in the area in there.
