Another Winter Storm Heading For Long Island

Just after getting over the blizzard of 2010, another high impact snowstorm looks to be on the way.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the entire area for Tuesday night into Wednesday. The exact strength and track of the storm is still uncertain but snowfall in excess of 6 inches can most likely be expected. The details of the Winter Storm Watch can be found here.

A low pressure system, which s now barreling east through the Ohio valley, will begin to weaken and transfer its energy to a new low pressure center that will form off the Southeast coast. This storm will then track northeast, passing close enough to the area for a significant snowfall. The storm is expected to stay far enough offshore to keep coastal locations all snow, with the only possible exception being the Twin Forks of the island.

Snow will begin over the Port Jefferson Area sometime after midnight early Wednesday morning. It will become heavy at times overnight into Wednesday morning. Winds will also be a concern, causing blowing and drifting of snow. The whole thing should be over by later Wednesday afternoon. The rest of the week will be cold and dry.

The highest impact period for this storm will be the morning rush hour commute on Wednesday. It will be extremely difficult to travel at that time and the delays on local highways are likely to be extensive. The National Weather Service has also put out a winter weather preparedness bulletin which can be found here.
