Plimpton! Starring George Plimpton as Himself - Port Jefferson Documentary Series

PLIMPTON! STARRING GEORGE PLIMPTON AS HIMSELF is both a chronicle of one of the last century’s most interesting characters, as well as a cinematic adaption of his nuanced and very funny literary style. This moving and engaging film tells the story of writer, editor, amateur sportsman and friend to many. Using Plimpton’s own narration – along with thoughts and stories from friends, family and contemporaries – the film is a joyful celebration of a life lived fully, richly, strangely, and, at times, a life that is hard to believe was actually lived by just one man. In fact as an artist, George’s life was his greatest work of art.

Plimpton hung out with U.S. Presidents, played quarterback for the Detroit Lions, got Willie Mays to pop out in Yankee Stadium, photographed Playboy models, played goalie for the Boston Bruins, struck the triangle for the New York Philharmonic and acted alongside John Wayne, Warren Beatty and Matt Damon.

He also co-founded The Paris Review, which became one of the most influential literary magazines in history, launching the careers of generations of writers, from Philip Roth and Terry Southern to William Styron and Jay McInerney.

Interweaving the intimate interviews with Plimpton’s own narration together with amazing archival footage and photos, PLIMPTON! STARRING GEORGE PLIMPTON AS HIMSELF becomes an insightful and compelling look into this great man’s life. It is a documentary film about football, literature, magazines, fireworks, hockey, movies, presidents, lawn chairs, geniuses, and the honest-to- goodness tall tale that brought them all together.

Sponsored by the Greater Port Jefferson and Northern Brookhaven Arts Council, the Port Jefferson Documentary Series brings the directors, stars or experts for each film into the theater for an up-close and personal question and answer session. The special guest speakers for the film will be Tom Bean and Luke Poling, the co-directors, writers, and producers.
