Fire Alarm Causes DMV Evacuation

DMV in Port Jeff Station reopened following an earlier evacuation, as a result of a malfunctioning fire alarm.

A fire alarm caused the evacuation of dozens at the Port Jefferson Station Department of Motor Vehicles, earlier today.

A dispatcher for the Terryville Fire Department confirmed that crews responded to the alarm on August 2, 2012, sparking the evacuation of the building’s staff and visitors. He declined to comment further.

According to those who were evacuated at approximately 2PM, there was no actual fire, simply a faulty alarm, but customers stood outside for hours. Upon arrival of a Chief from the Terryville Fire Department, the building was deemed safe and it was determined re-entry would be safely permitted. Employees were able to return into the building, but customers were forced to wait outside until approximately 4PM.
