Joan Hughes, a Port Jefferson resident since 1993, died on Oct. 14 at home with her husband at her side, according to various reports. She was 59.

"When she wasn't negotiating for teachers in the Greenwich, Conn., school district, Joan Hughes could often be found tending the tulips and tomatoes that thrived in the garden of her Port Jefferson home or baking a batch of brownies for her husband's students," read an obituary in Newsday.

Her husband is a professor in the Department of Administrative and Instructional Leadership at St. John's University's Oakdale campus.
