Setting a Precedent of Peace

The Port Jefferson Board of Education recognized three middle school students for their positive personalities at its October meeting. Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Antonio Santana introduced Michael Brown (sixth grade), Hyun Jim Lee (seventh grade) and Michael Ruggiero (eighth grade), who were selected for commendation by their teachers based upon observations made since the start of school.

“Typically it has been my experience that students are recognized for their academic, athletic or musical achievements,” said Santana. “Since October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, I felt it would be important, appropriate and very topical to recognize students who exhibit positive character.”

Michael Brown was acknowledged for being a conscientious student who is always willing to help his peers. “Michael never hesitates to go out of his way to make things easier for others,” said Santana. Next, Hyun Jim Lee was lauded for her self-initiated effort to befriend a new student this academic year. “She has made an honorable effort to help acclimate this student to her new environment and even encouraged her to join the soccer team,” added Santana. Michael Ruggiero was noted for his leadership qualities and his ability to effectively include all group members. “Michael is very accepting of and extremely willing to hear the opinions of others,” said Santana. “He seems to find genuine joy in helping people accomplish things.”
