Brush Fire Burns on Bicycle Path on Sunday

Wooded area between Comsewogue High School and Sagamore Hills Condominiums flared up.

On Sunday at around 4 p.m. a fire flared up somewhere between and Sagamore Hills Condominiums, according to a resident who reported the incident to Patch.

Port Jefferson Station resident, John Byrnes, the blaze was put out quickly and the fire department crews stayed around to hose everything down.

"I spoke with a couple firemen who said the fire was likely started by a group of people riding dirt bikes on the trails back there," he said.

Police said a call came in around 4:07 p.m. and the brush fire was deemed non-criminal. Arson detectives did not respond.

Byrnes said that he often sees people riding dirt bikes and even trucks in the woods behind the Sagamore Hills complex and has called police. He sent in some photos of Terryville Fire Department as they were putting out the blaze.

"Sometimes news just happens in your back yard, literally," he said.
