Nope, no need for stepped up patrols or police in the area. Guess they are waiting for someone to die. Appears this may have been close, but not yet!

In the middle of a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon....It's disgusting!...There are people who LIVE in this "hell zone"...Men, women & tons of children...There are businesses in this area, owned/operated by people trying to hang on to their livelihood...Property owners who have seen the economy "hit" the values of their buildings and have to add to that the "hit" that these lowlifes take.... The area is overrun with gang members, drug dealers, criminals, drug addicts, drunks, homeless, and the "entitled" who are totally supported by our government (via OUR tax dollars) who's days are spent doing nothing but hanging out looking to make extra cash, typically illegally.... The fact that this area in the Incorporated Village of the Port Jefferson, but totally ignored is a disgrace. You are soooo right Earl in your statement that someone will have to die to take action is soooo on the mark it's scary... How can the Major & her board continue to turn a blind eye and deaf ear to this situation? Upper Port has become Huntington Station and despite urging from the law abiding people in the area (residents, biz owners, property owners) they continue to ignore the dangers. Who will be the victim?...A dealer, a junkie, a store owner, a customer, or perhaps an innocent child...How will Major Garont & the Board spin THAT?... Stop playing with these assinine "Revitalization Plans" and DO SOMETHING!

Maybe Port Jefferson needs its own police department and a stiffer local vagrancy law.

Agree. The area is declining fast. Although apparently not directly related, the large number of loud motorcycles in the area only promotes the negative ambience.

Richard, Port Jefferson has its own security department with virtually no power. The town is also in danger of losing its school district if/when LIPA pulls out and taxes will likely be skyrocketing. I don't see them putting money into a PD any time soon. Mels/Earl, someone already did die up there. Remember the murder at Bada Bing (I'm embarrassed just typing that name) a few years ago? Also, those respectable business owners in that area don't seem to do anything about the people loitering in front of their businesses every day. Maybe because they're the reason those people are there loitering in the first place. Kevin, I'm convinced those bikes constantly rumbling in front of Tara's are the only reason the area hasn't been overrun. And they're definitely the only reason the front of Tara's and Lulu's is the only safe zone up there at night.

Diamond Code inforcement officers were hired to do just that. As far a a security force that is a big joke. The Village of Port Jefferson Village residents pay over 6 million dollars per annum to Suffolk County Police. They are the ones to call at 911. As long as the village tries to hide its problems they will only get worse. Diamond

We DO have PJ Code...Many of whom are former police officers who do carry guns...Instead of changing town codes to enforce early bar closing times, or a limit on decibiles in the town, the PTB could get serious and give the Code Officers some power...Instead of chalking tires and writing parking tickets, they could be assigned to problem areas and actually do some police work...They are currently afraid to more than drive thru upper port...A waste of the monies being paid for this security guard service...Use the personel that are already on the payroll...

John, I do remember (all too well) the murder at the Bada Bing...And holding our breath for days until the killer was arrested....That was passed over as a couple of crack heads IN the bar who's fight turned fatal.... The area is so different from even 2/3 years ago....The criminal element has risen to a truly frightening level. Thugs who have been evicted from the area come back everyday to sell their drugs and rob...Why?...Because they CAN!... Linden to the train tracks is just like the Terrace Ave in Hempstead of years ago...Just drive thru and buy anything you want....so you have the dealers there all the time and the addicts driving thru for their drug de jour...I just happened to slow down the other night turning onto Linden from Main and had a guy run right over to my car to see what I needed....I've been in the area over 7 years and never had that happen and quite honestly it was scary.... If any of this were going on downtown there would be an uproar from the locals, but because it's the ghetto uptown nothing is getting done...Someone please tell me how a mayor of such a small hamlet can ignore problems like this and get away with it?...

Patrol...Patrol ...PATROL !!! Only a larger presence can curtail ...as an outside observer , my opinion is , anything SOUTH of Hope House is like a scene from The Warriors...

Chris....Pretty much!!
Earl September 24, 2012 at 09:01 PM
Sadly, no one listens. I've sent emails to every political level, and the SCPD, all they say is they are working on it. Clearly they are not. There is no time for talk, it is time for action! All these idiots need to be voted out of office. I hope everyone else is emailing all levels of govt as well, we need massive pressure to be put on them.
Mels Ditties September 24, 2012 at 10:46 PM
Earl....I hear ya!...Send emails all the time...Attend meetings, speak to PTB...SCPD Sargent in the area....Very little ever comes of it... I've got a great idea tho'....You know how slumlords are at times sentenced to spend time in the buildings they ignore?....How about we have the Mayor and her board live a week uptown...They'd have to bring their cars and park them up there and then work in the stores and sleep in apartments...No leaving the area...No having extra cops or having the area "cleaned" before their arrival....I'd just LUV to see that happen...AND see how quickly we'd see positive action uptown...
Earl September 25, 2012 at 01:42 PM
Great idea, be nice if one of these phony politicians really cared and did something like that to show all of us. Will never happen in a billion years!!
Christopher O'Brien September 26, 2012 at 05:10 PM
station a code enforcement officer on corner of Linden & main from 6pm-6am on foot patrol. enforce loitering ordinances. the reason the politicians don't care is because you cannot see Upper Beirut from village hall.
Mels Ditties September 26, 2012 at 05:22 PM
That would be a great idea...But your observation RE: Can't see Upper Beirut from Village Hall is the reason (or one of the many) nothing is done...there is NO code enforcement (other than tire chalking on cars, motorcycles are exempt, because code is afraid of ticketing them) uptown at all... The rumored plan for years has been to let the area rot & then use eminite domain to acquire the buildings, knock them down and start over...The more trouble there is up there and the less & less that the Mayor & Co do anything, the more the credibility the rumor has...
