Mount Sinai Man Dies While Driving on Route 83

A Mount Sinai man is dead after he crashed into a utility pole last night on North Ocean Avenue in Mount Sinai but police are unsure if he suffered a medical emergency before the crash.

John DiBella, a 65-year old Mount Sinai resident died while driving his car on North Ocean Avenue last night crashing into a utility pole at the northwest intersection of Canal Road in Mount Sinai.

A police statement reported that DiBella hit the pole in his 2002 Kia at a “slow rate of speed” and he may have suffered from some sort of medical emergency before the crash while driving. He was taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson by Port Jefferson Ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

Lt. McVeigh of the Suffolk County Police Department's sixth precinct said that two witnesses at the scene told police they saw the car hit the utility pole but that to say what caused DiBella's death would be "just speculation at this time." He also said it would be a long time before anyone knew what happened.
