Updated: Port Jefferson Student Approached by Stranger on Wednesday

Incident happened on school grounds according to Superintendent Ken Bossert.

Port Jefferson School District issued a Stranger Danger alert after a man approached an eighth-grader on school property after dismissal on Wednesday.

The female student described the man as white and about 50-years-old wearing blue Nike running pants. While walking along a path near Brook Road next to the High School track the student was approached by the man who asked her about her age and grade, making her feel uncomfortable, according to School Superintendent Ken Bossert.

The student walked away from the man and moved toward a group of wokers nearby. She then called her father on her cell phone. The man drove off in a silver Chevy Impala parked near the track.

Update: Bossert said at a public meeting about school safety on Thursday night that after the incident a bus driver reported spotting a silver Chevy Impala matching the description that the girl gave to police. He also mentioned that the car has New York plates on the back of the car and New Jersey plates on the front, making it all the more identifiable.

The school said that Suffolk County Police were contacted. School officials also alerted the Port Jefferson Village Constables and Suffolk Transportation about the incident.

The school also encouraged parents to remind your children of how to respond in the event they are ever approached by a person not known to them.

I think you mean Brook Road, not Brook Avenue.

Hi Emma, Thanks for catching the error. I made the change in the article. - Lon

Why would a middle aged man need to know how old or what grade a young girl is in? There is no reason. There are creeps all around us.
Harry Dunn January 31, 2013 at 06:44 pm
richard, sounds like that 50 yr old might have been you. I think your comments about this topic might be a little different if that was your daughter. For you to question what's wrong with children and our culture just shows your stupidity.
Brian January 31, 2013 at 07:08 pm
Richard, what is ruining our culture is the fact that an 8th grader is approached by a creep in an environment that is supposed to be safe. Many times a person like this is a predator that has committed acts like this in the past. What is he doing anywhere near a school to begin with? All schools should have a closed campus. And I agree with Mr. Dunn. What on earth are you talking about?

One more thing. Do you really believe there is nothing wrong with a strange man asking a child about her age and grade in school? Please re-read what you wrote. It's really disturbing to me that it would be ok with you.

I don't know what planet you guys were raised on, but when I was young we weren't raised to be afraid of everyone and everything. Neither my kids nor my grandkids were taught to be offended or be "uncomfortable" by a casual question from a stranger. None of us know if this guy was -- as you put it -- a "creep" and a "predator". You all sound paranoid. And Harry Dunn, maybe you'd like to make that wise-ass comment to me face to face.
Brian February 1, 2013 at 06:26 pm
Richard, I hate to break it to you, but the times have changed. People are not paranoid, they are "simply" (this term you used to to suggest the stranger's approach) trying to protect their children. We didn't even lock our doors growing up and now we have alarm systems. Do you have an alarm in your house? If not, you may want to take a vacation from Fantasy Land and get with the times. It still amazes me that you are ok with this. You're dated in your approach to this matter. For the sake of your grandchildren, please UP the awareness!

little richard, just let me know where....but you should call an ambulance first so they can scrape your butt off the pavement and bring you to the hospital.

Gentlemen we may all have a difference of opinion but we do need to be aware and cautious. It stated the girl was made to feel uncomfortable. Big sign. It also stated he had different plates front and back. Big sign. I am proud of the girl that let her dad know she was uncomfortable. That is great progress from when I grew up.

It is unfortunate that an event such as this can result in anger and conflict. As authors of a children's book on this exact subject....entitled Stranger Danger as a matter of fact....we should all be thankful that the young lady acted as she did and the conversation is not a tragic one. We should take this incident and use it as a reminder to teach our children at a young age how to react and use common sense to stay safe.
