EPA Official: Report of Leak at Lawrence Aviation Site Is Untrue

A News 12 report sparked an investigation by EPA officials.

Following a News 12 report on what was thought to be a drum leaking toxins at the Lawrence Aviation site in Port Jefferson, The Port Times Record has reported the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found no evidence of such a leak.

The Lawrence Aviation property is currently the site of a groundwater treatment plant set up by the EPA to clean a plume of toxic waste resulting from the previous dumping of harmful chemicals by Lawrence Aviation itself.

EPA Section Chief Dan Harkay said in an interview with the newspaper that while "there's about 100 drums in that building that have been there for a while," most of them are empty, none have leaked and there is simply rainwater on the floor.

The News 12 report dated May 8 included photos that suggested a drum labeled hydrofluoric acid – a highly corrosive chemical – had leaked.
