Where Was This Historical Photo Taken?

Give us your guess in the comments below.

Is there something familiar about this building? It was located at a well-traveled spot in the village of Port Jefferson. Taken in August 1908 by an unknown person the photo depicts The Townsend House decked in all its finery for a special occassion.

This time around we're asking you to work a little harder:

  • First, tell us where The Townsend House was located in the village?
  • Second, what special occassion was all the bunting and drapery for?
  • Third, this building was located in an area that had a special nickname back then, as per the original caption for this photo.

Give us answers to any or all of the above questions.

Remember to check back next week for the answer.

The above photo comes from the Kenneth Brady Collection. Find thousands of historical photos in the digital archive of historical images on the Port Jefferson village website.

On the corner of is it Prospect street (West Main) and 112? I used to live right up the block from this.

The corner of Main street and east main. In the 60s my great aunt lived there. I'm guessing the celebration is the 4th of july.
