Port Jefferson Fire Department at the Port Jefferson Free Library!

It has been 125 years since the formation of the Port Jefferson Fire Department. Officially established on March 1, 1887, the first fire house was located on Main Street in what is now Z-Pita Restaurant. The Fire Department has come a long way from horse drawn fire trucks and they are happy to share their history with the library and our patrons.

From a model of the department’s first fire house, created by ex-chief Robert Collins, to a plaque depicting the history of the 1913 fire that destroyed the original Port Jefferson High School; the Fire Department has brought their best items to put on display.

To view these artifacts and more, just stop by the library anytime. The display case is located adjacent to the Adult Reference desk.
