According to a post on Facebook from Board of Education president John Swenning, "Due to the amount of oil leaked and the odor in the building [Superintendent Joe Rella] will be sending the kids home early."

Instead of the normal 1:54 p.m. dismissal, students will be sent home today at 9:30 a.m. Swenning also said that Rella will be making a call home to parents notifying them of the early dismissal.

12:07 p.m. -- Update from a
ssistant superintendent for business, Susan Casali: "This morning when the custodial staff checked the boiler room they discovered oil in the boiler room and we decided to take extra precautions and send the students home while we waited for our environmental consultants and boiler company to arrive and assess the situation," said Casali in an email Monday.

"The problem was a check valve on one of our boilers that failed that caused the oil to leak and we have replaced all the check valves and have had the oil spill cleaned up. The DEC (Department of Environmental Control) and our insurance company have been notified of the situation."
