Early Comsewogue Voters Split; Morning Turnout Sparse

About 255 voters showed up to vote between the time polls opened at 9 a.m and noon, a Comsewogue school representative said.

However, the representative said, the district will likely see a greater influx of voters towards the evening.

Several longtime district residents called the budget a fair one.

"I think that [superintendent] Joe Rella has done a very good job of putting forth a very fair budget for the community," said Donna Markert, a 50 year resident.

Michael Gongas, a 12 year resident, agreed. "There really isn't a lot of fat in it," he said.

Lou Azzara, who has lived in the district since 1969, said he supported the budget because his four sons graduated from the district and his two grandchildren will soon be in the school system as well. He said he wants all students to have the same great opportunities that his children had. "The budget seems fair, though it's still going to hurt," he said. "I still don't think there are the services there were back then, and a lot of the clubs and the arts and things like that."

Not everyone agreed, however.

"The budget is over bloated," said Richard Bascellero, a 30 year resident. "I'm paying too much in taxes."

John McGuinness, a resident since 1996, said he voted "no."

"The taxes are too high," he said. "Put out a budget that lowers taxes. Every year for the last 40 years it's been going up all over Long Island."
