Last Chance: Port Jeff School District Budget Meeting

Series of budget meetings starts on Monday.

Talk around town has turned to the school budget in Port Jefferson. this year. First is the tax cap. Because of , school districts must tackle with the ceiling on how much they can raise the tax levy in the 2012-2013 school budget. Second, is the LIPA power plant. If things go the way the utilities want, the tax grievences threatens to .

With both of these issues in mind, the district passed a budget last year that included an . This year, Superintendent Kenneth Bossert made it clear he would not present a budget that goes above the tax cap. He didn't.

Administrators presented , although it comes with some pain, including a decrease in the high school day from 10 periods to nine.

On Monday, Bossert, along with Assistant Superintendent for Business Sean Leister takes the budget on the road for a series of presentatons to the community. The first presentation is Monday at 10 a.m. at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School. Another one is set for 7 p.m. on Monday evening at Village Hall.

There will be more meetings in April but to get your first look at the budget, if you haven't already, then Monday is the day.
