Port Jefferson Students Make Snowflakes For Sandy Hook

Project was supported by Newtown elementary school PTA.

Students from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School joined their teachers in a project launched by the Sandy Hook PTA that encouraged students to create snowflakes to decorate the halls when the returned to they Newtown school in January.

According to a statement released by the school the project even incorporated academic lessons.

Art teacher Carrie Morgan had students use isosceles triangles, angle bisectors and geometry to create the snowflakes. Kristine Vaccaro had students use calculus in while making 3-D snowflakes. Spanish teacher Dawn DeLeonardis-Moody and social studies teacher Lauren Trelewicz also supported the project.

“I felt so proud of our kids to take a tragic event that affected our students, some personally, and produce beautiful snowflakes,” said Sarah Ogden, the project coordinator. “It made me smile inside and out.”
