High School Honored for Athletes' Academic Accomplishments

Port Jefferson's Earl L. Vandermeulen High School has some dedicated scholar athletes.

With every varsity team earning a grade-point average of 90 or better this past year, Port Jefferson's Earl L. Vandermeulen High School has been named a Scholar/Athlete Team School of Distinction by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

In an announcement on the school district's website, Debra Ferry, director of health, physical education and athletics, said the achievement is a testament to the district's "academics first" attitude.

"Although this is a varsity award, it would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of our coaches on every level," Ferry said.

A School of Distinction trophy will be awarded in the fall by the NYSPHSAA.

“I look forward to many more years of success from our Port Jefferson athletes and coaches,” Ferry said.
