Infant Jesus Girls Basketball Goes Undefeated, Earns CYO Title

Sixth grade girls earn Nassau-Suffolk CYO's A-Division Championship

The sixth grade Infant Jesus girls basketball team went undefeated in its march towards the Nassau-Suffolk CYO’s A-Division Championship, which culminated last week with a 27-19 victory over St. Phillip Neri of Northport.

Coached by Jim Sartori and Mark Cergol, Infant Jesus finished with a perfect 12-0 record in the regular season and drew a bye in the first-round of the post-season bracket. They then went on to defeat St. Rose of Massapequa, 24-16, on Feb. 2 in the finals to advance to the championship game.

The championship was a rematch of last year's fifth grade CYO Championship. In that game, the score was tied with less than a minute remaining before Infant Jesus hit a jumper with 24 seconds left to secure the victory and the championship.

This year’s contest was also hard-fought as St. Philip trailed by just four points to begin the fourth quarter before Infant Jesus pulled away to secure their second consecutive Nassau-Suffolk CYO Championship.

This team has won 28 of its 30 most recent contests and 19 consecutive (including the regular and post-seasons).

They will now prepare for their final contest of the 2012-13 Season in the Second Annual CYO Classic, where they will represent the Nassau-Suffolk Region and compete against the Brooklyn-Queens CYO Sixth Grade Champion.
