Year in Review: Comsewogue Warriors Fall and Winter Sports

It's been quite a year for the Comsewogue Warriors.

It’s been quite a year for the Comsewogue Warriors. A year filled with joy and disappointment, injuries and unfortunately no championships.

Beginning last fall when the two-time New York State champion soccer team took the field in a new league and a new classification you could tell this year would be different. The Warriors finished with an 8-4 record in League IV and were 8-7 overall and eventually lost in first round of the playoffs to West Islip ending their two-year domination of Suffolk County soccer. Unfortunately, the girls soccer team did not fare as well, finishing at 6-6.

“It was a good year,” said head coach Dan Costello who will mark his 10th season at the helm of the Warriors this coming autumn. “It was a very good year.”

“After winning two New York State championships the expectations were high," he said. "But it was a successful year. We lost in the first round to West Islip in a game where things just didn’t go our way. A majority of our players were young – we had only three seniors who started. Next year our expectations are to make the playoffs again and take it one step at a time.”

Meanwhile, the girls field hockey team finished at 10-4 in Division III and made the playoffs showing that they will be a team to contend with in 2012.

“We had a good year,” said head coach Nicole Kidd. “It was an exciting season and we made the playoffs for the first time in four years.”

The football team redeemed themselves from a subpar 2010 season and finished the season with a 5-3 record in Division II. Unfortunately, their heroics ended there as they were blown out in the quarterfinals by Newfield.

“I thought that we had a good year,” said head coach Chuck Carron. “We moved up to Division II and we beat Bellport who went on to win the Suffolk County championship and we beat the defending champion Riverhead. So I feel pretty good about how we finished up the season.”

This past winter the boys basketball team reverted to their old ways, finishing the season with a dismal 0-18 overall record while the girls team made the playoffs for the second straight year with a solid 12-6 overall record.

The wrestling team showed continued improvement finishing in second place in League IV with a superb 17-6 dual meet record.

“Overall it was an unbelievable year,” beamed head coach Brian Fitzgerald who will mark his 15th year as coach in 2012. “We set a school record for wins for the third straight year and we won two tournaments including the Bob Armstrong Tournament in Port Jefferson. It was outstanding for Comsewogue wrestling and hopefully we’ll get some respect. The hard work has finally started to pay off. We had 11 All-League kids and sent 10 wrestlers to the Suffolk County tournament. It was just an outstanding year for Comsewogue wrestling.”
